Trekking
in Lahaul & Spiti

most people Lahaul is a halfway point for trekking into the
Zanskar valley, while Spiti marks the conclusion of a trek
over the Pin Parbati pass from the Kullu valley. However,
there are some excellent treks, starting from Lahaul in
particular.

Summary
: If you
are looking for a high altitude trek that can be wrapped up in
very little time then you must head to Bhrigu Lake. At 4270 m,
this lake can be reached in a day from Manali. The lake, which
is located eight kilometers southeast of the Rohtang Pass, is
on of the main lakes of the Kullu area. A natural forest of
fir, spruce, moru and the higher altitude Kharsu oak treek
surounds Gulaba, from where the trek begins.

: This is
your chance to explore the greenest corner of Kinnaur. Backed
by the Srikhand Range, the Rupi-Bhaba WS has the greatest
altitudinal range amoung Kinnaur's three sanctuaries(1200 to
6000m). This allows you to see vegetation ranging from
subtropical to alpine, all in a day and half. Near the Sutlej,
the goral can be sighted. Further up you can spot serow, tahr
and misk deer and near the Spiti boardse you may see ibex and
blue sheep. |

Summary
: The
Segement of Spiti needs at least a week to do it justice.
Pressed for times, it can be managed in less time because a
motorable road connects all the night halt points. For the
week - long trek, it's fairly easy till you attempt the
Langza-Kibber segement on day five. The soft option is to trek
down to kaza. For tougher trekkers it's a steep descent
northwest into the gorge of the Shilla stream and then an even
longer ascent to Tashingong. The climb is tough but the reward
is stepping onto hallowed ground where the Dalai Lama camped
in 1983.

Summary
: The road from Jhibi to Ghyagi
climbs south through exquisite forests of blue pine and
deodar. From Ghyago you have the option of an easy(but longer)
walk that follows the motorable road to Shoja. But you could
also take a steep foot-path through the forest ad along the
Ghyagi Nallah. As you climb higher the mixture of
rhododendron, horse chestnut, blue pine and deodar becomes interspersed
with spruce, moru and the fir. The rest of the trek is equally
picturesque.

to Lamadug
A
day trek to Lamadug, distance 14 km,takes 5 to 6 hrs.The walk
is through deep forest,one can see the views of oppsite
mountains of Deo tibba, Hamta Pass & Panaromic view of
Kullu valley & Pir Panjal Range.

to Solang Valley
A
beautiful picnic spot, nice meadows surrounded by the trees of
silver oak and spruce. International skiing slopes with a
small rope way. The walk is easy & moderate through
trees lines, villages, encounter old traditional villages,
there culture,streams, walking through famous beas river side
& view are of Rohtang pass, Solang area, Friendship &
Ladakhi Peak covered with snow.
Manikaran
Famous for its hot water
springs on the river Parvati, the place traces its origin to a
legend. The water here is so hot that food can be cooked in
the hot spring water. A well known pilgrimage it is famous for
ancient Hindu temples & Gurudwara. According to legend
Manikaran is also associated with Lord Shiva & his consort
Parvati who lost & recovered her earring here.
Rohtang
The highest point on
Manali Keylong road, it offers ample skiing and trekking
opportunities at an altitude of 3980 mtrs. Situated on the
Kelong-Leh highway, the pass offers a wide
spread panorama of mountain scenery. It is directly opposite
to Sonepani Glacier slightly left to the Twin Peaks of Geypan
Tibetan
Monastery
A
small monastery in a peaceful clearing has image of the Budha
and some of exquisite tangkhas. Famous for carpet weaving and
Tibetan handicrafts.

- Naggar (Historical Place) - Rumsu
A
day trek to Rumsu village, drive by vehicle to Nagar covering
a distance of 21 Kms, start of trek is from Nagar castle, one
can see roerich art gallary of Chanderkhani pass, walking
through apple orchards, Rumsu village & deep forest
walking is about 14 km.

Hadimba
Temple
Magnificent is the only
introduction for this craft par excellence. Built in 1550 A.D
it has a four-tiered pagoda roof. Famous for its exquisitely
carved doorway, Hadimba is dedicated to the goddess-turned-demoness
Hadimba, the wife of Bhima. If we believe in local stories,
Bhima killed demon Tandi the brother of Hadimba to marry her.
For local people it is Dhoongri Mata temple. Every year
thousand of travelers move enchanted by the architectural
excellence and divine beauty of Hadimba Temple. |
