"NANDA DEVI CLASSIC TREK"
This classic trek retraces the pioneering steps of Shipton and Tilman through the Garhwal Himalaya. It takes us across the picturesque meadows and valleys that border the western edge of the Nanda Devi Sanctuary. Trail leads among beautiful dense and oak forests, crossing passes , springs , beautiful tiny villages and enchanting green grassy meadow.
During the trek there are many views of the
surrounding peaks and the Kuari Pass (3658m) itself has an unrivalled panorama
of the Great Himalayan peaks including Nanda Devi (7816m), Changabang (6864m),
Dronagiri (7066m) and Kamet (7756m).
The immediate landscape has been beautifully tamed by centuries of low-key
habitation and cultivation but the constant backdrop of the mighty Himalayan
peaks makes for a magnificence unrivalled elsewhere in the region.

Day 01: Rishikesh /
Joshimath - Mundoli (264 km), 1350 m.
We follow the gently winding road into the heart of the Garwhal foothills, pass
Rudraprayag with its memorial stone to Jim Corbett and the famous man eating
leopard and we go up to the Pindar valley. We camp above the road-head near
Mundoli. O/N - Camp.
Day 02: Mundoli - Wan
(13 km), duration 5 / 6 hours, 2450 m.
An excellent start to the journey through rhododendrons forest, hand-tilled
fields and small friendly villages. We camp near an old Forest Rest House with
impressively large deodars.
Day 03: WAN/BEDNI/NANDA
GHUNTI TREK (12 km) : Duration 6-7 hrs.(3354 m). O/N:CAMP
Today involves a long climb to the magnificent bugyal or grazing meadow of Bedni.
Here we are rewarded with startling views of Trisul (7120m) and Nanda Ghunti
(6390m). A tougher day of steep ascent and descent. O/N -Camp.
Day 04: Nanda Ghunti -
Kanol, (10 km), duration 6 / 7 hours, 2086 m.
Classic walk as we head north for rolling meadows bordered with ancient
rhododendron trees which give the most wonderful display of colours in spring.
The trails are good and the scenery magnificent.We camp near a river beside the
village of Kanol. O/N - Camp.
Day 05: Kanol -
Nandakini Valley (13 km), duration 6 / 7 hours, 1982m.
We start the day by trekking up and out of the Nandakini valley, a tough
climb along good trails. Birds of prey such as Lammergeyer, Golden Eagle and
Himalayan Griffon are common in this area.Camp in a peaceful and wonderful
meadow for the night. O/N - Camp.
Day 06: Nandakini Valley
- Nanda Devi (Semkharak) (12 km), duration 7 / 8 hours, 2060 m.
A day traversing one of the main valleys near the Inner Sanctuary of the Nanda
Devi.A steep descent to our campsite above the gorge of the Bharagithi. O/N -
Camp.
Day 07: Nanda Devi -
Pana (14 km), duration 7 / 8 hours, 2448 m.
We cross the river on a splendid suspension bridge. Shipton and Tilman were not
so fortunate and had to improvise a crossing out of fallen trees, trunks and
ropes. From the river we climb steeply to a level trail to the next camp, in
sight of the Kuari Pass.
Day 8 : Pana - Dhakwani
(15 km ), duration 8 / 9 hours, 3668 m.
An easier day: we camp at Dhakwani near the base of the Kuaripass in preparation
for an early start the next day.
Day 09: KUARI PASS ( 12
km), duration 5/6 hours, 4268m.
We make a pre-dawn start for the pass to gain the best views. We follow the
zigzag path to the top of the pass. The route is not difficult and the views
that unfold at the top are unrivalled anywhere in the Himalayas. A stunning
panorama of snow covered 6000 and 7000m peaks stretches as far as the eye can
see. After savouring this moment we descend to a sheltered grazing meadow to
watch the peaks fade into the twilight. O/N- Camp.
Day 10: Kuari Pass -
Joshimath, duration 8 / 9 hours, 1871m.
The final day of our classic trek. We descend further the Alaknanda valley and
the small settlement of Tapovan where we meet our transport to Joshimath,the
important halting point for Shipton and Tilman during their explorations...
Day 11: JOSHIMATH/RISHIKESH
DRIVE:08-09 HRS O/N: HOTEL
We continue our journey to Rishikesh. O/N - Hotel/Camp.
